StorkStand

StorkStand_2Mike Goldberg is an artist, athlete and product developer hailing from the Bay Area. An alumnus of the Claremont Colleges in Southern California, he returned to his home of San Francisco several years ago to work for Samasource – a fast-paced startup aiming to alleviate poverty through the power of digital crowdsourcing.

After several years working for the Silicon Valley startup, Mike invented StorkStand, a new type of standing desk that allows people to be healthier and more productive in any office environment.

“Simply put, StorkStand was born out of need. Like many early-stage startup employees, I suffered from severe back and neck pain from sitting for more than ten hours at work each day hunched over my laptop. I needed a standing desk badly, but just couldn’t afford the standing desks that my doctor recommended.”

Stand with StorkStand

StorkStand was built with the goal of providing a affordable solution for anyone looking to live a healthier lifestyle.  In order to achieve his goal of an affordable product, Mike built a standing desk solution that actually attaches to an office chair, making it mobile and compact for any workspace. StorkStand offers a mobile workstation that you can wheel around your office, use as a podium for presentations, or finally get that window view you always wanted.  When you’re done standing, StorkStand simply collapses and stores under your desk or in a bag.

StorkStand_5Standing at work improves metabolism and blood-flow, it burns up to 260 calories an hour, and it helps to keep you sharp and focussed so that you do your best work. Meanwhile, having a desk you can move around the home with you is ideal for easy multitasking whether you want to watch YouTube while washing up, or chat on Skype while working out.

Mike describes himself as an ‘expert tinkerer’ and explains how he had to pick up the skills necessary to design a great product ‘on the job’.

“I’m not a product designer in the traditional sense, but I am eager and excited to learn everyday. Many of the software programs and tools I used to design and prototype StorkStand out of Techshop SF, I had to learn on the job. I’m an expert ‘tinkerer’ with no formal product design education, just a whole lot of trial and error. I think my background in marketing is an extremely valuable tool – it allows me to see the product from the user’s perspective, rather than only from the designer’s point of view.  After all, our goal is build a healthy product that is beneficial and accessible to many people.’

StorkStand on Kickstarter

With Mike’s background in startup marketing and sales, a Kickstarter campaign seemed like the most efficient way for the young inventor to get his idea off the ground.
