Ninth Sprocket Brings Pro DLSR Camera Features to iPhoneography

Oh, the places we’ll go! And with our trusty sidekick, the iPhone camera, we capture some amazing pictures. However, as much as most people love using their iPhone cameras, there are definitely some features missing that can be found in more professional SLR cameras. Ninth Sprocket merges some of these key features into a device that your iPhone can use, plus some fun ones that are just, well — fun.

with and without Ninth SprocketThe most immediately seen aspect of the Ninth Sprocket is the large, solid grip of which I’m definitely a big fan. It has a built-in stand that makes it easy to scroll through iPhone pics, as well as a couple tripod mounts. Now for the fun stuff. First off there’s the fun spot LED lights, which allows you to shine a LED light forward from your camera. This creates a kind of imitation flare image that can add pizzazz and a creative touch. The other big feature is the Spark Filters. These allow you to add a color film over your picture, giving you the creative license to change the mood and feel of the picture.

Ninth Sprockets list of accessories and features are:

  • Large grip ensures you’re holding the iPhone securely in your hands while taking photos
  • 2 tripod mounts
  • Built-in stand
  • Felt case to store the Spark Filters and Fun Spots
  • Wrist strap for extra security
  • Numerous Spark Filters especially selected for dramatic and cool effects (sea blue, dark blue, pink, purple, yellow, red, warm up)
  • A bundle of Fun Spots LED lights to help you obtain amazing light leaks and flares (white, yellow, red, blue)

Ninth Sprocket creative examplePersonally, I’m a few degrees away from even being called an amateur photographer, but this product got even my creative gears moving. With Christmas gatherings coming up, I began thinking how the types of features Ninth Sprocket gives could make those pictures more fun and festive.  On top of that, I could also play around with the Spark Filters, bringing a feeling of warmth even if the picture is of my family outside while it’s snowing. As Mark Shurtleff says, Ninth Sprocket gives you the tools and you are only limited by the creativity of your imagination. I can see why he says that, and it’s true. The only downside we found is, like most products out there right now, it supports just the iPhone 4s at the moment.

Mark has really thought this project through and has a great product on his hands. His Kickstarter funding goal even includes funding needed to make Ninth Sprocket usable with the iPhone 5.
