Magnic Light iC

The ‘Magnic Light’ from Dirk Strothmann and Magnic Light Innovations is a great Kickstarter success story and a rare example of a genuinely new technology being used in an exciting and practical way. Magnic Light is the world’s first contactless dynamo-powered bike light. What this means is that it generates power from the rotation of your wheels, but without ever having to come into contact with them. This is a power source that many people didn’t recognise or even believe when Dirk first took to Kickstarter, but which has since provided the basis of his highly successful launch. Today there are 2,000 Magnic Lights on the road, and now Dirk is hoping to release the next model.

Where the Power Came From

The idea for the first Magnic Light came to Dirk when he saw his brother trying to slow down his bike with magnets.

‘I got the idea that it would be better not to waste energy, but to make use of it'

As a world-class duathlete, Dirk knew just how to put the technology to good use and set about creating the light using a generator that would react with the magnetic fields of the wheel itself. The result is a light that will never run out of battery and leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere, and that won’t create friction when you ride. There are no cumbersome cables and no environmentally unfriendly batteries. Of course the product was a huge success and quickly found coverage across the web and a range of print media.

With the first models completely sold out, the next step for Magnic Light Innovations is to release their upgraded ‘Magnic Light iC’ which is where the new Kickstarter campaign comes in. The new models will feature redesigned lenses to avoid blinding oncoming vehicles. Additionally, if Dirk is successful he has a stretch goal to add an additional anti-theft system to the new units. He has set himself a high target goal of $40,000, but with only 21 days to go he’s already close with $111,687 raised. Head over to Kickstarter page if you want to help the revolution…
