The OsmoBot

The OsmoBot is a device from Zach Stein and Paul Holowko aimed at hydroponic and aquaponic farmers that can provide convenient data readouts straight to a mobile device. Hydroponics is the process of growing plants using nutrient solutions in water with no need for soil. This has a lot of benefits – allowing you to grow a lot in a small amount of space – but can be time consuming and costly thanks to all the testing required. By removing the need for time consuming manual tests, the OsmoBot can help farmers and hobbyists alike spend less time monitoring and more time growing food.

The Birth of OsmoBot

The idea began in Paul’s garden. While Paul works as a system’s engineer for his day job, his real passion lies in gardening. Paul decided to mix these disciplines when he created his first biosphere: a closed system with its own climate and ecosystem sustained purely through heat and light from outside. Paul hoped in creating his biosphere that he could gain insight into how vegetables and plants might be grown on other planets or in space. This presented a problem for Paul however: he had no way to open the system in order to test the nutrients in the soil or the humidity etc inside the container. Thus, he devised a series of tools in order to take those measurements. Paul was surprised to find how cheaply he could build the OsmoBot, which will cost less than $1,000 under the current competition. Paul took the idea to business director Zach Stein, and the rest as they say is history.

The OsmoBot will come with seven sensors allowing it to record PH, water temperature, water level, dissolved oxygen, light spectrum, relative humidity and air temperature. The OsmoBot will take readings every fifteen minutes and upload them to the cloud for you to access conveniently through your phone, tablet or computer. The OsmoBot app will even alert you to potential problems so you don’t miss them. You can find a lot more detailed information at the Kickstarter page, where OsmoBot has already raised $5,198 of a $70,000 goal.
