Heated Butter Spreader

Ever heard the expression ‘like a hot knife through butter’? It’s a term used to say just how effortless something can be, by comparing it to the experience of spreading butter with a warm instrument. This is in contrast to how it can sometimes feel spreading cold, hard butter – which takes effort and results in an uneven spread. But seeing as putting your knife in the microwave is a one-way ticket to the hospital, this is how most of us have experienced spreading butter up until now.

Butter knifeFood for Thought

That’s where startup ‘THAT!’ (‘designers of award-winning products as small as computer mice and as large as electrical vehicles’) and their heated butter spreader ‘SpreadTHAT!’ comes in.

They are a new brand, but the company has been in existence for 12 years, and are the top independently owned product design company in the world (companies better than us on the iF ranking are giant corporations like Sony, Apple, etc.). They have won over 100 product design awards.

One of those wonderfully simple ideas that you can’t believe no-one already thought of, the device does everything you’d expect in providing you with a heated knife for cutting through butter and other stubborn foods (peanut butter, jam, chocolate, cheese etc.). In the promo video, it can even be seen cutting through a block of ice!

Like many great inventions, SpreadTHAT! was born out of the team’s own frustrations and ‘stress points’.

‘When we set out to lay a course for the brand and the products we want to bring to the world, we listed some of our very own frustrations, in and around the kitchen. Spreading cold butter was one of them.’

Butter spreaderA Cut Above

SpreadTHAT! is made from the latest heat-conducting technology, thus allowing it to utilize your own body heat in order to warm the blade – no battery required! It has already won the 2014 product design award and is now on Kickstarter to raise funds (here if you’d like to get involved). The project is now fully funded with 21 more days to go. It made it, just like a hot knife through butter!
