Matboard: Easy to use GPIO board for Raspberry Pi Computer

Matboard is an easy-to-use GPIO expansion board for the Raspberry Pi. In case that’s all gibberish to you, the Raspberry Pi is the incredibly cheap and small ‘bare bones’ computer that has become a favourite among hobbyists and makers and in classrooms everywhere, and GPIO means ‘General Purpose Input/Output’. This can read four ‘inputs’ such as switches and Raspberry PI mounted on top of Matboardsensors and has four output channels. This allows you to configure your Raspberry Pi to interact with any number of real world gadgets, gizmos and devices.

Want to create disco lights that dance in time to the music? This is an easy way to make that happen and to learn the process along the way. Otherwise you could create an automatic dog or cat feeder, a security alarm system with motion sensor, a controller for a remote controlled vehicle, an interface for a custom-built robot, automatic plant watering devices or even basic games and puzzles. The Matboard comes with easy to follow examples for learners and really the only limit is that of your imagination.

A Father and Son Team

IMG_3701Matboard comes from Martin of ‘Winchester Laboratories’. Martin has a degree in electronics and has worked in the field for years and was introduced to the Raspberry Pi through his son Matthew (who helps him with many of his ideas).

‘My son got a Raspberry Pi when he was 9 years old , and initially it didn’t hold his interest. It was too complex, and he needed my help to make anything happen. Several of our friends who don’t have an electronics design background like me had the same experience. There kids moved on and the Pi sat in a cupboard. What we wanted was an easy board that would enable people with only basic computing and electronics skill make something happen in the real world.’

Inspired by the ZX Spectrum computer which he learned to program on in the 1980s, Martin set about changing that – See more at: https://www.berkeleysg.com/crowdfunding/crowdfunding-spotlight/matboard/.

MatboardMatboard has already received £1,978 in funding on Kickstarter which puts it over its £1,500 goal. You can still join in if you want to though as there are 14 days left to go. Visit the link here to back the project.
