Kolibree

Kolibree is the world’s first connected electric toothbrush. By connecting to an app on an iOS or Android device via Bluetooth, this smart device is able to give feedback on how often you brush your teeth, how long you brush and which areas of your mouth are not getting enough attention. This way you can ensure that you maintain good habits, set yourself goals and track your performance. Thus you can expect to enjoy much better oral hygiene and a much more efficient brushing experience.

The Origin of Kolibree

Kolibree ToothbrushThis project comes from a meeting of two entrepreneurs Thomas Serval, an ex-employee at Google, and Loïc Cessot who is an engineer and self-described ‘new technology enthusiast’.

‘The original idea was to have a tool for parents to be able to check that their children were using their toothbrush correctly – something that doesn’t exist elsewhere on the market.’ They explain. ‘Following deep reflection, we made the link with the increasing trend in connected objects and we realized that a toothbrush which was able to inform users on the quality of their brushing could have value, both for adults and children.’

The name Kolibree also has an interesting story behind it:

‘We thought that the Kolibree, which means Hummingbird, was the little bird that cleans the teeth of crocodiles (in the Nile). However this is not true at all… but it was too late as the name had stuck!’

A Great Start

So far Kolibree has all the makings of a success – with the enthusiastic support of all the dentists who have seen the device so far. Sharing stats with dentists can help them to get a better idea of what’s going on with your oral hygiene and to make tailored recommendations based on that detailed data.

Now Kolibree has taken to Kickstarter where it has already surpassed a goal of $70,000. Currently the team are at $86,343 – but there are still 25 days left to go if you want to get involved. Head over to their project page if you want to get involved before it gets too long in the tooth…
