Keyport Slide 2.0

Tired of carrying a bulky keychain round with you everywhere? Well the Keyport from Keyport Inc. might just be the solution for you! This little gadget is a single ‘sheath’ solution that can house several keys at once and then allow them to be retracted or extended at will using a sliding mechanism. Rather than having lots of different loose keys dangling around on a chain then and digging inKeyport keychain as usbto you when you sit down, Keyport provides a single sleek casing that can house them elegantly until needed. Better yet, you can use the device to house a range of other everyday carry items too including a USB flash drive, bottle opener, and barcode holder, as well as a wide range of transponder chips. You can even keep a flashlight in there then use it to find your keyhole rather than fumbling around in the dark.

The Origin of Keyport

The original idea for the Keyport was born when founder and chief designer Josh Downes (an alumnus of UC Berkeley) decided to tackle the problem of bulky keychains. As an avid motorcyclist, Josh found that his then-current chain would flail around noisily while he was driving and scratch his paint work. So this meant he had to keep the bike key separate from his other keys, or remove the bike key every time he wanted to use it. Thus he came up with the following criteria for the Keyport’s design:

  • Able to house numerous keys with a ‘one size fits all design’
  • Small, light and durable
  • A single construction with no rattle
  • Easy mechanism for replacing and adding more keys

Hearing about the Keyport project online, David Cooper (who’s now president at Keyport) contacted Josh to suggest working together. Between them they developKeyport keychain closeuped the idea further to create a new product category they dubbed the ‘universal access device’. This would also be able to house flash drives, LEDs and other small gadgets that regularly come with us when we leave the house.

Happily for Josh and David, the Keyport is already off to a great start and they’ve managed to raise considerably more than their initial target goal of $75,000. This has been helped by features in a range of impressive blogs and publications including SuperStreetBike Magazine, Engadget,  CNet and others.
